Dr. Sawyer was most recently the Superintendent of Schools in Brevard County, Florida, and served in that capacity from 1994 until his August 2000 arrival at Tulsa Public Schools.
From 1991-93 he was the Superintendent of the Clovis Unified School District in Clovis, California, and from 1988-91 he was the Superintendent of the Pickens County Public Schools in Easley, South Carolina.
Dr. Sawyer also served as an Assistant Superintendent in the Fairfax County Public Schools in Fairfax, Virginia, holding that post from 1980-88. He was a teacher and department head for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from 1976-80.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967, his Master’s degree in 1970 from Old Dominion University and his Ed.D. from Texas A & M University in 1972.
Dr. Sawyer and his wife, Joyce, have two grown sons and five grandchildren. He enjoys sailing, woodworking, collecting ceramic mice and learning the five-string banjo in his spare time.
