Sal Khan has been named the 2023 Brock Prize in Education Innovation Laureate for his significant contributions to the field of education, which have impacted people around the world.

Khan is the founder of Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Khan Academy’s content and mastery learning platform has more than 145 million registered users globally and has been translated into more than 50 languages. The organization partners with school districts across the country that serve students who are historically under-resourced.

The Brock International Prize in Education Innovation, named for Oklahoma natives John and Donnie Brock, is awarded annually and recognizes individuals like Khan, who have made a specific innovation or contribution resulting in a significant impact on the practice or understanding of the field of education.

“Sal Khan’s work is a perfect example of the type of innovation we want to reward through the Brock Prize,” said Brock Prize founder, John A. Brock. “His work has harnessed the power of technology to level the playing field for millions of children, providing world-class educational tools that were previously beyond their reach.”

At a ceremony on April 27 at the Khan Academy headquarters in Mountain View, California, Khan was awarded $50,000, a vellum certificate denoting the honor, and a sculpture of legendary Native American educator Sequoyah.

In response to receiving the award, Khan said, “It’s an honor to receive the Brock Prize in Education Innovation. I deeply appreciate the Brock Prize’s long-time support of innovation. Educational advances come about through the hard work of trying, testing and learning, and the Brock Prize recognizes that.”

Dr. Ed Harris, Administrator for the Brock Prize, presented Khan with his awards.

Ed commented, “Sal Khan is continuing to change the educational landscape, and we couldn’t be happier to shine a light on the great work he is doing.”

In response to receiving the Prize, Khan dialogued with Harris about his work and the plans he has in store for the future. A video of their discussion is available on the Brock Prize YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/a1oJqclo2mY.
