At Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Stephen Pape led the design and implementation of an online doctor of education program. The program is delivered with the same rigor as a face-to-face program and is accessible to students anywhere in the world. The levels of innovation in Dr. Pape’s work include content, process, and support structures that introduce students to a research methodology grounded in improvement science and systems thinking. This is accomplished by using a problem of practice from the student’s own professional context and embedding the dissertation development in parallel with the program’s coursework. His work has resulted in equipping thousands of leaders with knowledge, skills, and dispositions, enabling them to able to systematically investigate educational issues and preparing them to oversee numerous innovative solutions over the course of their careers.
